My starter packed up because the brushes were worn down. I've bought a new one, but thought I'd refurbish the old one as a spare (I also have a 1971 Minor Van) I've checked a few threads on here and it is fairly straightforward, but there seems to be one issue not covered anywhere!

The old field brushes are spot welded to the tag from the windings. I'm assuming soldering might melt with the high current, so how do you secure the connection to the new brushes?

It's a Lucas M35J starter on a 1972 Mini

On the last starter I worked on I soldered the leads.  Like you, I was nervous about the possibility of the joint separating.  From memory, what I did to alieve my fears was to take a single strand of fine copper wire and wrap it over the joint before applying the solder so it would have a mechanical support.

Yes, these carry a lot of current but thankfully it is only for a very short burst so your fears and mine may be unfounded.

Yes as Doug has already pointed out they are spot welded and some are crimped into ally, solder the wires and insolate is what I do

Be advised these starters can contain asbestos dust. Take appropriate protective measures to avoid inhaling the a risings.

Thanks for the replies, in further research I've found brush sets that contain a length of solder so that's the way I'll go.

And thanks for the asbestos warning AC.
