MY tax disc runs out on 30th Sep so that'll be the last one. Apparently the very last ones are going to go for £££.. although I don't believe it (if anyone wants it I'll start the bidding at £500 ;D ).

I'm guessing I will get a reminder letter through in a week or so and will have to phone/internet the DVLA to re-tax it?

Going to be a right palava buying cars now... Got to tax it before you can drive it away, which will be awkward if you're in the middle of nowhere. When the DVLA receive the change of keeper forms they will automatically issue them a refund. Full months only of course! :goaway:

There may be a loophole in the new procedure. As the seller cannot send the V5C to DVLA until the new owner gas signed it the vehicle will still show up as taxed until the DVLA gets it and processes it. Therefore it would probably be safe to drive the newly acquired vehicle home as ANPR cameras will still see it as being taxed until it is updated. Technically probably illegal but a way round if there were problems getting through to DVLA at the time off sale.

I did think that actually. However when the DVLA receive the change of keeper form from the old owner, it will have the date of sale on it. You would have to go online pretty sharpish when you got home, or take the car off road (who's to say you didn't trailer it home?!) to ensure you didn't get a fine. Oh yes and make sure the Police don't stop you on the way home!

As you only get a refund for full months and you can only count the road tax from the first of the month as a new buyer, ie sold on the 15th June old owner only gets refund from 1st July for any remaining full months, new owner taxes it from 1st June there is technically no period that the car has been untaxed, unless of course it was currently sorn, then it is difficult to formulate the legal offence. It has had tax paid in reality twice for a month or best part of, and as tax discs will be obsolete the offence of failing to display is not applicable. It will take a legal test car to determine which law has been broken. Could be interesting if ever challenged.

We will see won't we. At least it unofficially brings back a 'grace period' of up to a month, although how strict the authorities will be about untaxed cars being on the road we will find out.

Yeah, I don't have to carry a parking permit or anything like that. Probably just end up with my last disk in for a few months lol

I've had a replica made of the first tax disc my Mini ever had. I even know the office which printed it and the date :genius:

and the government get two lots of tax, that is so wrong. Perhaps we'll see a trend for car sales only happening at the end of the month now.

I claimed tax back when I sold my last car. Sent the disk back on about 10th April but they didn't get round to processing it until the end of May, so the cheeky gits deducted May's refund as well. Went through a bit of aggro to get it back but I did in the end. IT'S THE PRINCIPLE!!!

Good for you.

Once they were even nice to me! I lost a car in a fire on the 30th of the month and by the time I applied to get the tax back it was the next month but they still refunded the full month.

The latest tax discs to be issued have no perforations (cut out yourself) and look like an 'in-house' photo-copy as the DVLA have now run out of proper tax discs and don't want to order anymore to be printed professionally.......includes a note with disc to tell you this.
