New member needs some help!!!

My 2011 One d on 68K miles suddenly broke down. Got it recovered to my garage and he told me the timing chain has slipped causing the 3 of the rockers to smash. The internal damage is yet to be looked into

Took it to Mini and they have said for them to request a goodwill claim they need to strip it down and the cost of that is £2k.

Then even after that they are not sure if Mini will contribute.

The car ran out of warranty in Feb 2014, has got FMSH and I took out a new TLC in Feb.

I cannot understand how the chain would fail. I have read numerous reports of the tensioner failing so I am assuming this is what has happened here.

I am so disappointed with this, it was running perfectly before.

Any thoughts on what I can do with Mini?

Take it to a specialist if Mini wont help, it depends if the pistons and bores and the cylinder head is damaged on the final cost but your not alone or the first to suffer this fault

These engines are quite robust ( they are Pug motors until the BMW units were used ) and im surprised you have issues at such a low mileage

£2000 to diagnose a fault seems a bit steep

I would be looking for a replacement engine & chain / tensioner replacement on it

if it's smashed 3 rocker's - then valves will be useless , Likely head damage / piston damage , etc

I would cut your losses & swap the engine

sorry to be cynical , but to spend £2000 - & still not know if MINI will pay for some of the damage would worry me somewhat

I wish you luck with this

I was thinking the same thing.

Can get a reconditioned engine for £2k all in.

Thanks for the help

Is it definitely a chain and not a belt?  The R50 Mini One D with the 1.4 engine was a chain cam Toyota engine, but the later ones I thought had the 1.6 Peugeot based diesel engine which had a cam belt.
