Second question for today.

My exhaust in the past (not by me) has been sealed with some strange white fibreglass rubbish and my manifold is rusty as hell.

Its time for a new exhaust system, I want something loud but not power zapping like a 3inch DTM.

Will a single box maniflow system 1.75inch be loud?

The only comparison I have is a RC40 twin box exhaust on my bosses' Cooper, would it be louder than this?

If I do this should I replace the inlet too and air filter? Pretty much a stage one kit but I don't want a 'off the shelf kit'

ive got a single box maniflow on mine. I did have a twin box maniflow and in terms of volume I cant tell the difference. the single box has a nice sort of rumble when you lift off though which I like and is the reason I swapped.

it will be about the same as the rc40. the rc40 seems to be a bit more raspy whereas the maniflow is more rumbly. Ive had an rc40 in the past as well and I much prefer the maniflow which is much better quality as well (although also more expensive). if you've got a standard exhaust and manifold now then you will have to change your inlet manifold as well yes or modify the standard one by cutting off the exhaust bit. its really not worth it though. Maniflow do off the shelf stage 1 kits which will probably be perfect for your needs

Cheers mate, think I'll go with maniflow!

Should be ordering it this weekend.

Is it much louder than a standard exhaust?

Its been a while since Ive driven with a standard exhaust. from memory its a tiny bit louder although my standard exhaust kept blowing at the manifold join making it louder than normal! There wont be a huge difference but the sound is nicer

I have an RC40 ( single box ) with LCB. Sounds lovely but not too loud.

If you're just after a loud exhaust go for a no box system

There is a difference in the exhaust sound according to what cams in the car, a standard 1275 sprite with a single box maniflow system will yes have a more sporty note, but a 1275 with a modified head and a 286 cam will have a more aggressive note again.

My 1330 with a big valve/ported head and a 276 runs a single side exit single box and unless your on the loud pedal its not that noisy, but wind it through the gears to 6500rpm it does indeed sound like the 1275 Cooper S i had back in the 70s

Maniflow is top grade and I took off a twinbox RC40 as it was to quiet

i changed my old maniflow single box system to a twin RC40 system as it did my head in whilst cruising. but i think getting a bit older has played a part as it never used to bother me years ago. also my mini has no sound proofing bar the carpets so i think it resonates. i wont even entertain fitting new bitumen type floor sound deadening now i have had the floors restored so i had to change the exhaust.

Over the 20 years I've had my Si I have tried bloody hundreds of exhausts. The car came with a Janspeed single box side exit, nice, but quite raspy accelerating through the gears. Play mini side exit single box sounded fantastic all the time, but the wadding didn't last and it got progressively louder but not in a nice way, same thing with their twin exit centre too, but that was way too noisy and gave me a headache after 20 mins or so.
My best exhaust to date, although not the current one, was the Maniflow side exit twin DTM, correct size bore 1" 7/8 and not too big tail pipes either, but the sound was EPIC, not loud as such, but proper deep and throaty with a nice little 'pop' on the over run.

At the moment it's got an RC40 millennium twin box in stainless steel, that too sounds nice but is quiet at the same time.

Any mini wanting to have that 'head turning' appeal should be throaty, but not excessive, and have a nice deep and crisp sound.
Depends if you want ' head turning' for the right reasons.

But this waffle is just my opinion....go for what makes you smile when you drive it.

That said.....Maniflow all the way.....excellent quality and built to last...I've just changed my Maniflow steel LCB due to a crack between the Y piece, but is was 15 years old..!!!
