I have just installed a replacement engine.
With no trottle and no choke it starts and idles perfectly, but as soon as I touch the throttle the engine drowns out and a puff of petrol pops out of the carb.
If I pull the choke out, same result, engine dies.
Checked the spark plugs and they are sotty.
Any ideas as to what this might be?
Cheers
Iggy

This could be down to fuelling etc. Does the carb dashpot have oil in it?

I pulled the dash pot plunger out, and it had plenty of oil on it.
I'll try topping it up.
I was thinking it maybe the mixture is to rich?

Have you set the timing as well?

Is distributor in good condition, new points, condensor, cap and leads?

I haven't adjusted the timing.
I transfered the dizzy from one engine to the other, with both engines at TDC hoping the timing would be ok.
Can I check the timing with the engine running at idle?

You definitely cannot just transfer the dizzy like that and expect the timing to be spot on. You need a timing light to set it properly (by turning the distributor in the block)

Timing was at about 25 after TDC.
Moved the dizzy clockwise until it reached approx 12 before TDC and it started revving as should.
Thanks for the help.
