With your current system you are probably never actually filling the system. When it gets warm and would normally force air out of the rad overflow you are actually blowing coolant out because the air is in the stat housing as that's now the highest point.

 

Get a Metro stat housing with the takeoff and run it to a pressurised expansion tank. Put a bolt through the overflow pipe on the radiator and change the rad cap for a none vented one ('60's diesel Land-Rover oil cap is a candidate that fits).

 

Put a thermostat back in whilst you are in there - they are there for a reason and just having the fan stop and start is not enough of a substitute.

Update:

 

I bled the system, the car now runs and gets to normal temp at idle. When you drive it the car now gets hot (above normal) as before - however it does not start blowing coolant out anymore. 

 

so im happy the 'bubbling' is fixed, just need to solve why it is overheating. I completely understand the fan thing - I probably do need a mechanical fan aswell, but i cant fit one at the current layout - I will need to move the electric fan to behind the wheel arch.

My eaton set up would over heat. Aux fan inthe wing sorted it (well no inner wing there any more, just made a bracket to hold the fan). Is you ingnition timing ok?

What sort of bottom pulley are you running? Is there no room to space the fan away from the charger belt?

Okay, I think i may try to put my electric fan in the wing, not keen on removing inner wing for structure reasons but will bolt to it instead.

 

I am running a home made pulley, which sticks out a bit - yes I can space the fan out but not currently as the electric fan is in the way! once i move that I will try and fit a mechanical fan in addition.

 

I only have a plastic mayfair fan - would this push enough air?
