I've been struggling to fit new caliper seals tonight and was looking for some advice. I've got 8.4" brakes and im fitting new stainless pistons, which l gave a good polish on the bench grinder (with a polishing mop!) And managed to fit one piston with seal. I was going to smear the seal and piston in some dot4 but the fitting instructions said to fit them dry, surely a bit of fluid won't hurt will it? I managed to squeeze in the piston ok in spite of everything being dry but the dust seal was a bit of a mare! I think im going to have to make a gadget thingy to get the dam thing to go in square, nearly wrecked the first attempt tonight! Any tips on what to use on getting this bugger in? I haven't split the calipers by the way.

I use brake fluid to lubricate the piston and seal (to prevent tearing). Dust seal I put in with a steel plate (was a tool for pulling laminate floor together).
A g clamp on either side of the plate and wind down together evenly.

I find it easiest to fit the dust seal once the piston was fitted.  Doing it before the piston nearly always leads to it getting damaged.

Thanks for that, a smear of dot4 will greatly help I think. Are you screwing down the piston along with the dust seal then? I thought of doing this but feared the seal would come up over the chamfered edge of the piston, obviously it doesn't!

Piston in then leave about 10 - 15 mm (1/2 inch in old money) sticking up out of the caliper. Lubricate the dust seal with red rubber grease or brake fluid and wiggle done the piston until touching the caliper casting.

Wind the plate down evenly which pushes the dust seal in and piston flush with caliper face ( almost as the piston stays slightly proud)

That's how I found mine! The taper on mine matched the caliper.
