Hi guys.

I'm planning on going down the turbo root for my 998 and i'm looking for which type of turbo you'd recommend.

Bit of info on what i'm planning on using the engine for:

I'm going to try to keep it relatively basic. I'm going to be putting a higher final drive in to make 4th gear motorway cruising as i'm back and forward from cornwall 7 or 8 times a year(300 miles each way). To make up for the higher final drive, i'm planning on turboing to bring back some decent ( and fun) acceleration.
I'm hoping to keep my standard pistons, or maybe go up 20 thou, so i dont want to run too much boost.

So what would you all recommend for this kind of application? Basically looking for a bit traffic light fun and just a bit of top end help. And where would i find one? ie. t3 from a metro, t2 from a whatever you find them on.

Cheers guys
Rob

It all depends on your exhaust manifold options. The widely available manifolds for the mini are the metro T3 one, which will be useless for what you want, the mirage which fits the T2, and I believe Matty over on turbominis made a batch of GT17 manifolds, thought the 17 will be too big for a 998 as well.

you can go for any turbo you like if you get a manifold made up, Top Gear Performance Ltd in st albans would be a good place to go for this I believe. In which case a GT1549 is reputed to be very good for a 998. Or if you can you can weld one up yourself.

Ebay is a good place to look for Turbos but bear in mind most of them will need rebuilding at the very least.

With what your plans I'd be looking at a T2/GT1549 depending on your budget, running 5-8psi with the head modified to give you 9.0:1 Compression ratio with an intercooler or 8.7:1 without an intercooler. depending on head mods that should net you 80-90bhp and only require clutch modifications to run on the standard engine internals.

I'm building a 998 turbo (very slowly..) and live in Harpenden so feel free to give me a shout if you have any questions.

Brilliant cheers mate. Yeah i would probably make my own manifold. I work up at Prestige Paintshop on southdown industrial estate and a fella i work with has made a few before.
I've just moved into harpenden in the last fortnight myself so you may well here from me! If you see me about in my blue metro be sure to wave

Yeah i know with the right manifold i could make anything fit but its no good bolting on a t3 when it wouldnt even get up to speed ha

IHI rhb5 from a daihatsu charade GTti would be a good turbo to use. They are 993cc and 99BHP standard. I have a charade gtti which had 150BHP using the standard turbo. Also various trims available to hybrid the turbo if you wanted more power in future.

I had thought about the charade actually, and during that thought, i considered maybe a toyota starlet turbo? How would that compare?

The starlet uses toyotas own turbocharger and I think they are 1.3 with about 130bhp. Lots of people seem to upgrade them for bigger turbos so probably easy to find cheaply. I've never had one so don't know much more sorry
