My son has just reached 17 and I want to add him to my insurance so he can learn to drive in the mini. He has a provisional licence. The car is a 2001 1.3 mpi Cooper. I have no points or convictions and neither does my son.

My own insurance company have refused to insure him (it’s with the Institute of Advanced Motorists). Another quote I have had is for over £1600. Is this typical for a learner driver? I was expecting thousands for when they pass the test but though it may be cheaper whilst they are learning supervised.

As a learner mine was £900 for a 998. So for a 1275 that doesn't seem to bad.

Who was that with? My 17 year old daughter has just passed her test and been quoted £1400 to insure her 1991 Mini 1000.

I pay approximately 1200 with admiral and classic car discount, I'm the main driver and I dont have anyone else on the policy.

As a learner, I'm a named driver on my Dad's policy with Go Girl which costs abut £400 for my car. If I pass my test today, I'll be taking out my own policy with Go Girl which will be about £1400, £1600 for a learner sounds a hell of a lot.

I didn't bother with insurance whilst I was learning. It made far more sense to spend the money on extra lessons. I just did my driving on private land.

Just found out the AA do insurance specifically for learners whilst they are learning. It's a fixed price of £360 for 6 months then can be extended at a later date. Sounds the best option so far.

That is still quite expensive. If you do a search for 'provisional driver insurance', you'll find some more specialist companies.

Also try putting the details into compare the market etc. to try some other companies.

I have tried a few companies and £360 is about the norm for a 17 yo for 6 months if you find it cheaper let us know I'm interested to for my son

We've used Marmalade for both the kids. About £80 a month as a learner on another family members car which is insured with another company

I'm also with Admiral for 1200 with a 998cc but their service has been awful to be polite. The cheapest quote was £1400 for learning so I didn't bother. just waited until i passed
