Hey All,

Not sure if anyone has done this before as couldn't find anything on here,

Has anyone mounted a set of spotlights behind the front grille?

Any ideas what this would look like or any issues with this being done?

I know this is the complete opposite type of car but kid of like this......

Interesting... you mean behind some sort of perspex/acrylic grille sheet?

Would that not cause a lot of distortion with the light reflecting back off the inner face of the cover?

You can buy a grill with holes for spotlights as in the link below

Yeah, I thought that style first, but I think he means actually encased behind another layer.

Can't say I've seen it done, but it might look quite cool. Imagine having the perspex grille with some nice cleaned up bay inside with some carefully place led lights.

Might be rather chavtastic to most, but for shows, that would look awesome with a light up bay seen from the outside.

Like the grille one this one but with lights behind the mesh.

Not a big fan of how the spotlights look with them mounted into the grille, was thinking if it was mounted behind the grille it could be a subtle glow......

Not much space behind the grille for anything. It's even difficult getting a 13-row oil cooler in there and that is very shallow in comparison with a spotlight unit.

It could work on a Clubman though and it would be good to get the face of the lights further back. Behind an acrylic screen would shield them from stones as well.

The old 'Benelite' grille allowed for 2 Lucas 5" lights to be fitted flush with the front of the grille and that looked a 'clean' design, but the front of the lights was slightly proud of the face of the grille.

The lights I have aren't the normal round ones, they are flat square ones and are rather slim.

Ill have a look over the weekend to see what kind of room there is behind the grille for them.

Was planning on taking the original slat type grille off, replacing it with a mesh one and mounting behind that(Similar to this)

The only trouble is the bonnet lip at the front, ideally I want to take that off and have the old mk1 style but don't know if its worth the agro with having to paint it all again.

Worth a try, keep up posted if you go through with it, I would like to see it!

I have to ask why the mesh though - would that not counteract having the spots there to begin with?

Will maybe have a ponder at the weekend if I get time, will wire them up loosely behind original grille and see how that looks.

I like the look of the mesh grilles but probably wont go through with them as cant be a##ed with the finishing works to smooth it all out.

You could cut the mesh to the size of the lights, then mount them to be flush with the grill face or slightly behind it. You can't blank it off with Perspex as that will stop it cooling properly.

Why not set the mesh grille about 1" further forward to make a bit more space, using the normal grill edging to act as the ends. It would need a bit of creative design, but not too difficult.
