Strange Knocking Noise From Behind Dash/bulkhead

Best Answer HarveyT , 02 October 2014 - 03:33 PM

take a look at the block to baulk head stabilizer bracket on baulk head I have repaired 6 of these over the last few years on members cars its quite common....

Had a look at my dads engine while he was out and the bolt holding the engine steady to the baulk head bracket was loose by about 3 quarters of a turn, and apparently now its stopped making the noise!

Thanks for the help everyone

My dad's Rover Mini cooper 1275 (Right hand drive) has a strange knocking noise which we are really struggling to solve.

It sounds like it's coming from somewhere in the middle/right hand side of the car, from behind the dash, the bulkhead or the drivers footwell.

It only happens when you take your foot off or on the accelerator suddenly or when you brake.

We also can't replicate it when its parked by shaking anything.

The sound isn't worn engine steady bushes or mounts as they have all been done recently, and sounds like something knocking against the body or the dash, very similar to when you squeeze a plastic bottle and it pops back to shape.

Sorry if that description is a bit vague but we can't really pinpoint it to a certain location or think of what it could be!!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Harvey.

subframe lower rear mount ? - or cracking in that area

carb or exhaust hitting bulkhead / floor ?

you may not get the force to replicate the sound while driving

We haven't had a look under the car yet for the subrame lower rear mounts but there is no cracking under the carpets.

As for not being able the force, we did think that but since we have changed the engine steady, the engine is solid! to the point where the car is rocking back and forth. The exhaust is fine as well.

Could be a loose bolt somewhere which makes a noise under certain circumstances

maybe leave it in low gear - hand brake off - ignition off - on flat ground

rock the car backwards & forwards while someone lies beside it - to isolate the noise

don't get run over - it's easy to do
