1293cc '80's Metro engine and 'box - rod change.

When I engage reverse, 60% of the time it goes in properly.  When it won't go in properly it crunches, not always the same level of crunch though.  If, when it's properly crunchy and impossible to get into gear without making a hideous grinding noise, I can drive forward 3ft it'll be less crunchy, if I drive forward a further 3ft it will go in nicely.  What would be the cause of this?

Clutch drag...

Reverse is a crash gear so any drag which causes the gearbox to be turn will result in a crunch or a thud when you select the gear...

Cheers John, fairly straightforward then. How does the moving the car forward make a difference?

One assumes you've pressed the clutch again to move forward... If you pump the clutch it'll probably have the same effect.

Ahh I had the thud when going into reverse, but it seemed to have sorted its self out. Well I did do an oil change few hundred miles after so most probably why

Why of course, so in theory a few old pumps of the pedal might be all I need to fix it pro tempore.

. I'll try that for now and bleed it again.  I'll be tapping you for good gearbox advice and purchase over the winter so it'll do for now.

Pumping the clutch doesn't help.  Any more ideas?
