Hi,

 

Do you need a speedo for an MoT?

Mine passed without mine working but the gauge was present.
They don't drive it enough to realise it's not working

As I understand it, a working speedo was a fairly recent addition to the MOT, but as above wether an MOT inspector will actually notice a defective one is a different matter. Personally I wouldn't risk it, an MOT inspector might notice the speedo not working when the car goes on the rollers for the brake efficiency test, equally they often drive the car into the test bay from the car park and might well notice any problem at that point.

My local mini friendly mot man has said when mines ready it just needs to have one fitted whether it works or not doesn't bother him

It needs to be there to record the mileage. Mechnical working condition is not checked.

It has to have a working speedo to show speed, miles aren't so important as that's classed as value not safety. There are a few quirky mot rules that get missed, like any spot lights must be in matched pairs and working.

None of that is true.

The speedo will fail if it is not fitted, 'clearly inoperative', has no (or broken) glass or doesn't light up, it is not tested for function but only by visual inspection at rest. The word 'clearly' is there to make testing It straightforward. The odometer reading is recorded and if it is unchanged or suspicious between 2 successive MOTs there may possibly be a letter on it's way to you demanding a VIC check in some circumstances. It's not just about value, but not having an odometer isn't a fail.

Optional auxiliary headlamps (spot lamps) are never a reason for rejection whether working or not, only obligatory headlamps are tested. Incidentally spots are not required to be fitted in matched pairs under the lighting regs, they are required to be symmetrical. One lamp in the centre (per Italian Job replicas) is symmetrical. Fogs must be in pairs, spots/driving lamps/long range lamps etc. don't have to be.

Only going from what I was told by a tester when my mini (albeit years ago) failed due to a spotlight not working, maybe when he said matched pairs he was just meaning they should both work ? can't remember now. I did after all these years wonder how the 3 spotlight minis had MOTs !!!!! just shows you learn something each day !!

As you will have to use the car on the road to get to MOT, wouldn't it be needed anyway?

I was going to get the MoT done at the same time as the engine went in, then get it trailered back to my garage so I can do the full assembly of the interior. I am going to make my own dash with different gauges in so I was trying to avoid fitting the old 3 clock binnacle.

Tis true, I am missing an optional auxiliary head/spot lamp, i.e. I only have one, the other is smashed and it wasn't an MOT fail.

 

I do have a speado tho..
