whilst driving last night the engine suddenly died on me. The power + on the ignition coil had come loose and fell off. I replaced it and carried on driving.. A few minutes later I noticed the car jumping a little in low revs. This gradually got worse to the point that unless I was giving it gas it would stall and started popping and backfiring

After a little investigating I replace the Ignition coil and dizzy cap but this had no effect. I cleaned the plugs and checked the HT leads and still nothing. Whilst the engine was running I checked for any loose wires, I pulled the Vac pipe off the dizzy and straight away the engine ticked over beautifully. I checked the pipe and ends and could find no obvious breaks. There is suction coming from the carb but nothing from the dizzy, As soon as I connect it back into the dizzy the engine straight away splutters, judders and tries to stall.. Its 1992 mayfair, 998, electric ignition..Im going to replace the whole pipe, can I check and clean the dizzy end or is it a new one because I may replace the whole lot....

Check the ignition timing as that's all the vacuum advance pipe alters. At a bit of a long shot but maybe somehow the dizzy has moved a little hence when you connect the vacuum pipe it's pulling the timing out? Long shot I know but worth checking your timing as that sounds like the problem. popping and backfiring are a sure sign of timing being out.
