At the very bottom of the carb is the jet assembly (the lowest point slighly above the bulkhead) - waxstat is the latter type and as the name suggests has a small "wax" (not sure whether it really is) element in it that adjusts jetting marginally in response to temperature - it's a fairly bulky assembly with debatable benefit....the early type is a fixed jet which is much slimmer in profile....
If you've a waxstat version and for whatever reason want to retro - convert it - its very very easy (for us in the UK!!!) remove the bottom cap - remove the waxstat element - replace with two one penny coins and reassemble - job done.....

the bottom of the carb there is a wax tremostat that self adjusts the mixture when hot.
