Hey all, I have a bit of a conundrum, I bought a new knob for my mini, and its the wrong thread size. I know that everyone thinks its either 5/16 BMW or unc (I think unc) but mine isn't. I checked the knob and its definetly 5/16 unc.

So what gives? What thread is my rover?

The standard gearstick thread is 5/16 UNC as you've said.

So you either have a non-standard gearstick or a knob with the wrong thread.

Unless the 5/16" unc bolts I just bought are wrong, then the knob is correct.

What other car could the selector have come from?

It would have to be an aftermarket one for the thread to be anything other than 5/16UNC

If you want to make sure, you can check using one the the bolts which hold the clutch cover onto the engine...

Well, I thought I'd just come back and let you all know how I got along.

I decided after a while that I didn't care what thread the gear stick was I was going to make it a standard 5/16 UNC thread, so I bought a die, and set to work.

Wouldn't you know it, after a few seconds cutting the starting thread, it was all 5/16" anyway.

Seems the first few threads were either marred or filled up with crap which made it feel cross-threaded!

Crisis averted!
