a) Leave it standard but get it tuned (i'm told this would max out at 50 bhp brand new)
B) Slap on a stage 1 kit
c) Slap on a stage 2 kit
d) Get hold of a metro engine from e-bay and tune that up
If anyone would be nice enough to have a best guess for the options above it'd be handy,
Cheers all,
FG.

BUT for starters keep the 1275 you have and gat a stage 1 kit.
Then go for head mods,cam,re-bore etc etc
Or pay 500 quid for a turbo motor off ebay and get loads of fun from that till it goes bang and fix that up

I was thinking more along the line of
a)50 bhp
b)70 bhp
c)80 bhp
d)90 bhp
...as far as drivability goes, the thing does need to get me to work and back each day, but I want an even better reason to take the country road route to get there...

My bank manager has never met me, what he doesn't know won't hurt him.....I was thinking less than £1500...

Well you do NOT want to be using a cam any more than the Kent 286 Scatter. Thats about as far as you should go with a daily town and county road driver. other than th cam its a decent gas flowed head, and cubes.
Final drive is another thing you should look at maybe a 3.44:1
Edit:
For an idea of what you are looking at.
Std bore/ crank/ pistons/ rods/ cam/ distributer, gas flowed head, 1.5:1 roller tip rockers, MG Metro Inlet, HIF44 carb, Maniflow LCB, RC40 Single box and a good rolling road tune. 78BHP at the flywheel. All that and you dont have to take the engine out of the car, Is as driveble as the standard engine ( it is standard realy) and just as reliable, all be it you set the rockers up right with the correct clearance and spring rates
