I have access to a Lucas 59D4 distributor that has be rebuilt by a trusted source.  Can it be used as a replacement for the 45D on a 1979 1275GT motor?

They mount to the block differently, so no. You could swap over the the advance mechanisms though.

On this side of the pond rebuilt 59's cost more than 45's.

No most probably not. Most if not all 45D dizzies are made for an A series block, whilst 59D dizzies are for A+. The mountings are different. If you can compare them and find they have the same mounting they can be swapped but to my knowledge it won't be possible. If you do swap them you need to make sure the advance curve is right, the simplest way would be to swap the springs and weights into the new one as they are interchangeable between the types. Also check the codes on the vacuum units are the same.

As always, nice clear responses.  Thanks.
