hi I need to lock my gearbox to take swap the pinion drive. ive engaged reverse with the selector shifter but cant engage 4th. Cant someone give me an idiots how to guide. Ive read you need to disengage the selector but cant find anything explaining how to do so.

The other question is with the 3rd motionbearing. it seems to make a click noise as it turns and the best way to describe this is it has a ball missing so as I it turns the next ball along runs down and bashes in to the next one? is this normal, I cant really see the condition yet or weather there are and balls missing although once the pinions off I should be able to get a pic.

Its an A+ rod change box from a metro 998.

To lock the box you need to dislocate the selector interlock spool, which will then allow two gears to be selected at once..

So. remove the drivers side diff side cover an remove the detent spring, ball and sleeve. One this is done rotate the selector rod 180 degrees anti clockwise. This has now dislocated the interlock spool. You can now select 4th gear by moving the synchro hub across with a lever and the reverse idler gear into position with your finger.

However..

You have a collapsed double roller bearing so you WILL need to strip and rebuild the gearbox.

Right, got gearbox locked and with strength I never knew I had got the pinion nut off. The bearing looks ok from one side but looks to have balls missing from the other which I take it is not good news?! So looks like I've got a bit more work to do.

Probably won't have balls missing, but that cage that should hold them spaced apart has probaably broken up.

Time to strip it right down, inspect, replace and rebuild!  It probably won't be the only bering or part that needs replacing.

what price would I be looking at to have this box refurbished? I appreciate that you say for definite until you've had time to check it but is there a rough figure for a totally standard rebuild? possible with a swap to a centre oil pickup. I have new final drive gears and the appropriate speedo drives to go in (brought from you) and if your based in rugby I can drop of/ collect no problem. Cheers

refurbs start @ £129 inc VAT, and as long as there's nothing wrong with gears, synchro hubs, the case ie what I call the hard items then there should be no additional charge...

More than happy to swap final drives over, fit central oil pick ups etc

likewise you can drop off and collect.
