Disc brakes were introduced onto Minis in 1961 when the original 997 Cooper was fitted with 7" discs. The 1071 'S' had the bigger and much better 7.5" discs from 1963.

The Clubman 1275 GT always had discs.

The 8.4" discs with 12" wheels were introduced in 1983.

To clarify re the GT, they had the Cooper S set up until 1974 I think, when the Denovo wheel was introduced, and this was when the 8.4" discs were introduced. But as above, they were not on any other model other than the 1275GT until the 25 of 1984, and from then on they became standard fitment across the range with 12" wheels.

Would you say nicely adjusted drums on steep winding roads would be adequate with 13hundrend engine or be a bit on the line I have never had the pleasure of driving with drums all round haha *sceptical face*

Many years ago I experienced 'brake fade' when descending a steep hill in a 998cc Mini with drum brakes and 4 passengers onboard........not to be recommended if you are used to modern disc brakes!

It depends on how hard you drive. If you drive at the speeds normally reached by the 850 or 998 drum-braked cars then drums will be no problem so long as they are in good order, have top quality brake linings and are correctly adjusted. However, if you use the 1275 to go quicker than an 850 or 998 the drum brakes will be at or over their safe limit.

Having once had an 850 Mini fitted with a modified MG1100 engine, but still with drum brakes, I would say go for discs. That's what I did shortly after fitting the bigger engine (in 1969).

For Clubmans the exact answer depends on the engine fitted. 1275 always had discs of the 2 different types already mentioned, dependent on year. 998/1098s always had drums

as an interesting but slightly off topic tidbit, there were some mokes made in Australia with factory 1275cc and drum brakes. They were made for the export market. In Aus it is illegal to upgrade to a 1275cc without upgrading the brakes to discs also, except on mokes as they came out of the factory with 1275/drums!

I'd probably want discs on any mini regardless of engine size. adjustment free ftw!!

I'm currently restoring a 1964 850, but I might fit the 998 Cooper 7" discs as they can't be seen and they don't need the constant adjusting as the drums do.
