After searching here and reading a bunch of threads about rear drum removal I haven't been able to locate any info on the problem I'm facing.  I have followed the steps outlined in the Haynes manual for drum removal (releasing the emergency brake, backing off the adjusters, etc.) and I've come to the point where I'm supposed to take the two retaining screws out of the drum and pull it off.  However, there are no screws in the holes to release.  Instead I have something with a flat surface with no slots for any type of screw driver where the screws should be.  I can see that a PO has removed one screw but the remaining hole on the passenger side drum and both holes on the driver's said drum contain the flat surface retainers.  They are flat and slick like the head of a nail.

Any idea what they are and how to remove them?  In 30 years of working on all manner of cars I've never seen drum retainers like these.

Jack

Rivet, or broken head off the screw? Any pics? Maybe drill them out?

I know it's hard to tell but does it look like it's been screwed or pressed in?

Pics needed, but Matts idea is sound, or use a dremel to make a slot. I have a spare slot bit for an impact driver that I have ground down so it's sharp. That digs in and turns at the same time so that could work for you as well.

Since they have no slots it appears they were pressed in.  So I'm not sure if they will screw out.

Only one way to find out.......

They could just be blind rivets but can't why they would be. Then it's a simple matter of drilling them out.

It's pretty hard to take a picture of something so small and deep inside.  Just visualize the head of a nail in a two inch deep hole.

Sounds like something has shared off if gone into the drum itself, ie not visible at all from the surface. Drill it out.

hard to do that considering the hole should only be about an inch is S/GT drums are on it.

and you sure that there is anything in there? as if the drum is on 90 deg out you will just see flat surface.

also if the head has sheared off what is the issue. there will ne nothing holding it on.

not that the bolts are really needed anyway.

One screw was previously removed.  The three that remain within the hole that many actually be only one inch deep have heads and would not slip through the tiny space where the threads are.

I had thought I would drill a hole in their centers and try to remove them with what we call an Easy Out over here.  But I wasn't sure if these retainers would screw out or if they were something I hadn't seen before and could somehow be removed easily.

Drill them out and don't bother with replacing them when re-fitting the drums. They are not necessary and can go rusty and seize in.

sounds like someone has already had the drill out.

easy out might work but I would get the Plus Gas out and a hammer and soft faced hammer.

spray, leave. spray leave. shock, hammer off
