So I used my Mini on a long journey in the dark the other night, can't even remember when that happened last. What I'd forgotten was how difficult it was to find any of the switches in the dark due to the lack of lighting. I've already decided to upgrade the instrument lights to LED but have been wondering about the switch panel.  Has anyone lit this with the standard switches? I don't expect to light power the switches, so what solutions have others used in the way of auxiliary lighting to help see the switch panel in the dark? Photo appreciated.

Hi,

If you have a Mini fitted with the 5 rockers switches on the central panel, Minispares do a switch illumination kit, including a "lights on" chime to remind you about leaving your lights on when you open your door.

Priced at £37.80 including VAT, part numberis MSSK2007

Hope this helps!

Cheers, Steve.

Never seen this kit before, but it looks quite neat. May have to invest in one!

Great little kit apart from the scotch locks. I'd definitely be soldering that into the loom.

Oh definitely, one of the first things I did to my Mini was replace scotch locks with soldered/crimped joints :D Hate the things.

Cam.

Thanks that's really interesting, not seen that before.  So what does it do, light them up as if they're switched on?

I have it in mine. They light up to half brightness with your headlights on. They light up fully when you turn the individual switch on.

I'll be upgrading my switches to one of these units at some point: http://www.theminifo...nels/?p=3160755

I like the look of them, but they look a little modern for my tastes in a Mini. I'd also want clarification of how much "wiring in" needs doing as I wouldn't want to chop my loom, hopefully some harnesses could be made up.

Looks like better connectors on the W&P kit but don't think they are in stock.

You would have thought BL/Rover would have fitted such a basic upgrade many years back but of course cost restrictions and a general lack of interest in investing in the Mini's future until BMW came along to fund the 1997-2000 MPi upgrade was the main problem that such things never happened

Even the Metro waited a few years after launch before getting switch illumination.
