 I'm changing the thermostat in my 83' Austin (998cc) and when I took the thermostat out of the car there was no O ring underneath it. I bought a replacement thermostat but there is 2 different O rings in the box, Should there be one? Could that have been the problem all along?

No o ring, just the gasket between the head and the thermostat housing.
