Hi everyone,

1991 Rover mini 998 (8.4" disk brakes)

I am having a little issue while removing the front hub, it doesn't seem to want to come off!

I have undone all the ball joints, removed drive flange, disk and caliper.

Now the only thing holding the hub on in the outer CV/ drive shaft - I was under the impression that the hub should just slide right off at this point but that doesn't seem to be the case!

Any ideas on how to get the hub off?

I can see the inner bearing race (of the outer bearing) and its moving on the shaft (about 10mm or so), but doesn't want to come off completely

Cheers,

Jake

try using a hub puller as it sounds like your shaft has got stuck... inside one of the bearings. if its the outer bearing you will be best off using a hub puller but if its the inner bearing you should be able to force the hub off the shaft by hand

They freeze onto the shaft sometimes, corrosion or just buildup of dry grease, filth, brake dude etc. stops the joint sliding through. Especially if the seals have failed. Put the castle nut back on upside down until it's flush with the end, having removed the taper washer, and hit it. Hard. A lot of times. It's easy to do if you pull the shaft out of the CV and put the hub back on the car without the shaft fitted so there is somewhere for the joint to go.

I use a the handle only from my Matco seal tool as it's just the right size diameter as the hub itself to knock it out.  Ensure you're not using anything two big of diameter or you'll be tapping on the bearing and it for sure won't come out.  It could also have seized up like Dan stated above.
