After fitting the new diff cover output shaft bush it needs to be machined to match the output shaft.

or take the diff and a new pot joint, fix the bush and have it reamed so that the new pot joint fits properly. Then add the oil seal and mount the diff cover.

is it likely to be just that bush that is causing all the play? it was leaking oil and I fitted a new oil seal but its only lasted a couple of months and its weeping again. can I swap it with the engine in situ too? will a normal engineering company be able to machine it, or is there anywhere anyone recommends? ideally in the north Manchester area?

There's a subtle difference between reaming and machining.... Certainly don't hand ream a diff side cover..
For the bush to perform its correct job of supporting the output shaft and drive shaft coupling ( of whatever variety ) it must be machined perpendicular to the face of the diff side cover and centrally to the locating collar on that face, this can only be done effectively on a specifically designed faceplate on a lathe, or a mill at a push. A ream of the correct size can then be used to finish the bush or more often using a tool in the headstock of a lathe.
Failure to do this will mean premature wear and failure, and back to square one...
The alternative is a good used 2nd hand one...

I've actually just ordered one from ebay, that I'm assured is in good order, so fingers crossed.
