One of my minis is currently up on axle stands whilst I rustproof under the front end, and I've just noticed a small hole in on of the flitch panels that I'll need to weld. The problem is that car is backed up against a brick wall so I can't actually open the boot in order to disconnect the battery (without putting the wheels back on, taking it off the stands, moving it forward and then putting it back up on the stands again.)

I'll be disconnecting the alternator, so is it absolutely necessary to disconnect the battery as well before welding? If so, could I get away with disconnecting the batteries positive feed to the starter motor instead?

Is it a later one with an ECU?

If not, then no problems but having said that, we never used to disconnect batteries at Vauxhall unless the battery was to be removed for access to the repair and had no problems at all!

I think there is a chance of damage but it's so slim, that it's not a concern.

Others will have a different view.....

Its a bit of a myth that welding ruins electrical components.  As long as you have a good ground and it is placed within a reasonable distance from your welding area you should be fine.  The current is always going to run the path of least resistance, so if your ground is poor or miles away you can risk damaging something.

I always mean to disconnect the battery before welding but forget once I've got everything out. I've never had a problem but that's not to say others wont.

It's an 85 carb model, so there's no ECU to fry!!

If you are worried about it, just pop the plug off of the alternator.

But as has been said above, as long as your earth point is close to your work piece, there is nothing really to worry about

This is one of those do I or don't I things. Now personally if I can get access to the battery and alternator I disconnect them and have done for years....................However modern cars make things a tad difficult. Disconnecting the alternator itself can be a major chore but it's the battery side of things here than can possibly create issues. I'm talking about radio codes that not all peeps have access to.

Now from an Ecu, Airbag point of view I have yet to have any issues with any of these and I have welded cars with stupid amounts of airbags fitted, eg BMW 5 series, and ECU's so what do you do for the best??? I know on a mini I will disconnect what I can. If I carry out welding for somebody on a mini I will ask them if they have the code for their stereo before I disconnect everything.

Now I have had one battery and one alternator go pop on me but looking back there was an issue there already. (my old RS2000) so I would say you will more than likely be ok.
