Hi....a bit confused........my 1994 mini has had a 998 manual engine transplant.......the engine number is 99he20  1096**......some research seems to suggest it came from a metro with a fdr of 3.105 - 1......is this correct.....also what would be the approx. year of manufacturer for this engine..........the research also says 1 st alternative compression ratio....what does this mean........any help much appreciated...cheers, dave.

99HE20's come from the 1st unleaded minis, which are the MIni Sky, Mini Rose and the Mini Thirty, ( circa 1989 )

Generally good strong engines, and you are correct that they have a 3.1 final drive.

Could they be fitted with a different final drive when they were for export countries ( the netherlands/Belgium in my case)?

It looks like i have a 3.44diff ( around 2.(2) k rpm for 60 km/h in 4th)

Rule of thumb for metric people.

rpm @ 100kmh in 4th is approx 1000 x your final drive ratio..

so scaling up your approximation... you have something around the 3.4-3.6 final drive...

I don't think there were any special export versions, especially as the 3.1 pretty much standard since the introduction of the 12" wheel.

the only exception was the Racing Green/Flame Red/Checkmate series which did have a 3.4 final drive. but they were a 99HF16* prefix. and the city E of course which had the 2.9

99H20 was the engine number, but I have no idea of what type of mini it was... only ' rover mini 1991' on the paperwork :P1526239_588053671262830_89686568_n.jpg?o

this was how she looked before restauration

Most export cars for that era had 99E20 or 99E22

If you get one the pre-cooper LE (racing green etc) the uk model had a 3.44, i've yet to see an export model with that diff, i've seen a few and owned two of them, none had a 3.44

It signifies the higher compression 998 unit of the two available at the time, eg, the 99HE22 was the lower compression variant, but there's not a vast amount in it.

Were they first series (Racing/Flame) or second series (Racing/Flame/Checkmate)?  Only the second series had the F16 assembly with the 3.44 FD and AFAIK it was the same word wide.  It surprises me to learn they were not fitted with the 3.44 overseas.

Both 1990 cars a racing green and a checkmate, export models

Ok it should be they're off the first batch in 1989 and then registered in 90, but surely was there a checkmate in the first of the pre-cooper LEs?

The first Flame and Racing were released pretty much with the Sky and Rose, and I believe shared the same engine... and ran the 3.1 final drive

They were then re-release in 1990 as the Racing Green, Flame Red and the addition of the Checkmate, these ran the 3.4 final drive, as Dan points out, with the 99HF16 engine code.
