...am changing the original 5x12's to 6x13's. Somewhere over the last 12 years I lost the spare wheel. What size/type will I need, that fits correctly in the boot, to make it legal and safe should I need to replace a wheel by the roadside?

Cheers.

If you work out the difference in diameter between the 12 and 13 with the tyre on, you'll probably find a 12 inch steel is very similar in size

I'm running 10s and still have the original rover spare wheel in the boot. Not measured the wheels personally but I'm sure they are more or less the same diameter

No such thing a space saver wheel when it comes to a mini. The 145/70 r12 was a standard size for both 12x4.5 steels and alloy wheels fitted to the mini as standard. And is pretty much about the only 'spare' that will fit in the boot comfortably and isn't that much different in rolling radius compared to a 10" or 13". The only problem and probably why on the sports packs the 12" spare is referred to as a space saver, is legally you can't mix tyre/wheel sizes on the same axle. i.e. you'd couldn't legally run a 175/50 R13 on one side and a 145/70 r12 on the other side. But it would be perfectly fine as a temporary, get you home alternative to being stuck at the side of the road.
