Just wondering what speed people cruise at on A roads and motorways  / dual carriageways. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I find that if I am sitting on a motorway or dual carriageway, I can't be bothered really going any faster than 60. If I am on a decent A road, then I enjoy driving quickly through the corners, but then on any straight sections or gentle corners, probably would do about 50.

By the way, I drive a 1275 SPi cooper.

What about you?

Constant 60mph on all national speed limit roads, slow down for some bends.

I drive at 70/75 if appropriate on motorways/duel carriageways. People driving unnecessarily slowly are a nuisance and cause accidents.

It depends on the conditions really, and how safe you feel in your car. If you're in a nice comfortable BMW etc. 90 probably feels perfectly okay, whereas in a Mini you'd be bouncing around and it would be extremely loud.

A roads, it depends on the road and conditions again. However most of them are now 30 and 40 limits with occasional NSL stretches.

Of course the speed limit every time ;)

But honestly foot down all the time, I'll drive as fast as I can go without putting other drivers at risk

I drive to the speed limit unless the road conditions are bad enough that I need to go slower.

Imho people driving 10-15 mph slower than the speed limit can be just as dangerous as people driving 10 - 15mph over the limit, especially on country lanes etc. The worst are the ones who do 40 in a 50/60, but also in a 30!

My pretty standard 1275 handles my 60 mile daily commute including 40 miles of Mway faultlessly at the limits :-)

On motorways, 85ish cruising in the Minis, driving at 60 on the inside is more dangerous I feel.

Interesting. Maybe I should have pointed out that I live in Scotland. Up here, most people do actually drive to the speed limits on motorways / dual carriageways, in other words on my daily commute on the M8, there are three lanes. Inside lane doing around 60, middle lane 65-70, outer lane maybe 80, but usually just overtaking.  We holiday in England, so I have experience of driving down there (A1 / M1, M6 etc) and I would say that you would struggle to do less than the speed limit there - though I find the A1 / M1 to be nuts and not very safe at all. Everyone foot down, lots of lane changing, lots of last minute braking.

I guess I just find the mini more comfortable and enjoyable when cruising a little slower. My normal daily (old 306 td) I drive at the limit or slightly above everywhere.

Agreed that too slow is dangerous, but I would dispute that if I was to head out onto the motorway in my mini and blast up it at 85mph - thus hassling the majority of drivers in the fast lane to get out my way and change lane - that this would be safer than sitting in the inside lane doing the same speed as everyone else and not requiring to change lane.

I cruise to work on the motorway around 5.30am at 57mph. Only because i love the 70 mpg from my new MINI. Having said that if im in the JCW then I tend to quite often ignore the speed limit on motorways and a roads if conditions are ok. In towns and built up areas then im a good boy, just because of pedestrians in a built up area.

If out inthe Mini I usually drive to the speed limits as anything above 70 is really noisy. in the Mini, its all about the driving experiance not the speed in my eyes

the speed limit - of course.... never over..

Lower than the speed limit does my head in unless its justifiable due to weather conditions etc.

In my road cars often well over the speed limit.

In my Minis, at good cruising revs. The 'S' I cruise at around 4200 rpm, which is about 62 mph with its low final drive.

ha ha. At least you're honest! Maybe I need to spend some time sound insulating my mini. I think that your comment 'good cruising revs' is the reason I go a bit slower, the car is very boomy in the higher rev range. Maybe if it was quieter up there then I would go faster !

As i'm still on the L plates I'm restricted by parents, Mom isn't keen at anything above 45 but Dad doesn't really care as long as it's under the limit. For example Sunday night coming back from a friends in the dark on a quiet road I decided to see how well she handled in the twists and turns :)
