Hi,

I am hoping someone will be able to help me with a problem I have with my Mini Cooper s (2003).

My run flat indicator light (on main dial in center dash) is on with a solid yellow light. I have checked all tyre pressures and they are all fine, I then reset the run flat light (it took a few attempts).

After about 5 miles it came back on again so I went to a garage and re-checked tyre pressures- still all okay. I reset the light and carried on my day. The light was off as I parked up outside my house last night.

This morning when I went out to my car and started it the solid yellow light was back on! I took it to Kwik Fit to check for any slow punctures but they have confirmed there isn't any puncture. They suggested it could be being caused by my rear passenger side tyre having 2mm tread as opposed to 4mm on all other three.

Has anyone else experienced this sort of intermittent problem with their Mini? What are the chances the lower tyre tread is causing the light to come on even if it hasn't been driven?

Many thanks for and suggestions in advance!

Rob

Normal the sensor in the wheel fails its a real common fault but id possibly consider a new tyre and see if this sorts it

Before shelling out money it may be worth heading over to a more MINI specific forum like MINI2.com

Although some of our members have both classic minis and new MINIs you are probably more likely to find more people who've encountered this problem

It is very unlikely to be the tyre wear  causing this but usually just a fault with a wheel sensor which is also shared by the ABS system I think......the runflat system normally senses a change in the wheel rotation speed caused by a de-flating tyre but if the sensor sends the wrong signal due to a fault the light comes back on.

It will  be ( as in virtually all cases that dont have punctures ) a faulty sensor.

Its a common problem on the older MINIS along with the airbag warning light. The sensor is linked to the ABS and measures the rolling radius ( or is it circumference ) of the wheel. If it detects a change due to low PSI it will ping the light on the dash.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

My girlfriends MINI did this,  i think reseting consists of putting in reverse and holding button down (behind handbrake!! hope this makes sense.

This has been done a few times on a MINI forum, european MINIS dont use the wheel sensors even though they are fitted to the wheels at the factory, I had a spat with a long standing expert on the site but it was confirmed that our uk cars dont use the sensors fitted to the valves but they do in America for example. One guy could not get it because he just kept saying he had seen the sensor in the wheel when they changed his tyres, "yes they are fitted to all wheels by BMW but they dont 'talk' to anything on your car!", banging your head against a wall :-)

They do however use the ABS sensor fixed to the car though for clarity.
