I noticed this note associated with a Minispares boot board kit - "This kit contains all the brackets and mounts that were fitted on to the floor on original Coopers, Wolseley Hornet and Riley Elf with boot boards fitted as standard."

My 1974 Mini has no evidence of a boot board or brackets.  From this evidence I've concluded that my MIni was not equipped with a boot board.  Were early standard Mini's delivered with bare boot floors?  I'm building my Mini as a Mark I variant, and I wish to  equip the boot accordingly.

My boot is also lacking any means of retention for the spare tire.  What is the correct hardware configuration for same?

My boot doesn't have a board. Always been bare but putting one in soon.

Early "standard" minis didn't have boot boards.

They were only used on the higher end models, ie. Cooper, Cooper S, Super (Not super deluxe), hornet and elf

Thanks for the responses.

Anyone with a response re: spare tire retention?

Mine just has a dip in the floor pan where it would go. Not got one in there at the moment though

On the Mk 1 and early Mk 2 saloons there was a spare wheel retaining bracket welded to the centre of the spare wheel well in the boot floor.

That explains why my Mk III has no bracket.  I believe I'll fabricate and install one.  I would think that an unrestrained spare tire would tend to move about and be source of noise.

Dusting off an old thread here, but has anyone devised a workable hold-down mechanism for the spare in the Mk III / Mk IV boot?

I'd like to keep my spare from flopping around on bumpy roads and in corners taken in spirited fashion.  As can be seen in the accompanying photo, other than the shallow well there is no hint that any sort of securing device ever existed (1977 Mini Mk IV).

Recommendations welcomed and appreciated.

Many modern cars use a plastic knob and cone (often one piece) which screws on to a threaded stud. The cone centres itself in the centre bore of the wheel. The stud is usually fitted to a raised bracket welded to the centre of the recess in the floor.

No reason why bits from a modern car can not be adapted to do exactly what you want.

Many cars of Mini age had something similar but with a metal nut, which in many ways is not as nice.

I have a boot board but as of now it is loose and free to flop around. The fitting brackets seem just the ticket, albeit a bit pricey.

On mine the standard 145/70 R12 wheel jams hard between the side of the fuel tank and the battery and is secure held there without any hardware.

Mine also jams in between the fuel tank and battery, in the wheel well...

It is also held in place with the boot board too...

I've seen rally minis in the past where two U bolts have been bolted to the boot floor with a bungee cord running between them and over the wheel to hold it down. One was on the front left where the fuel pipe goes through the floor and the 2nd was near the battery earth point.

Earlier minis had a boss welded into the boot floor to locate the spare wheel with a clamp that screwed into it. Clicky
