There not generally recommended if you have an alternator, as they usually only read + or - 30 Amps and most alternators give out much more.

A voltmeter is a much better gauge to fit as it shows the condition of the battery rather than the actual charging current.

As above make sure your ammeter will read to +/- 70 amps, or more if you have a 70 amp alternator.

30 amp ammeters were useful when we had 25 amp dynamos.

And a voltmeter is much easier (and safer) to wire in.

+1 go for a voltmeter tells you a lot and very easy to wire in.
