I am about to do an oil change on a 95 SPI Cooper and I have an oil cooler fitted. I haven't looked yet, but what is the best way to ensure the cooler is also completely empty of oil, as well as the pipes, to make sure the old crap isn't mixed with the nice fresh oil?

Does anyone happen to know what the total oil capacity is as well, adding in the oil cooler? I'm still checking Google but there doesn't seem to be an answer...

Not sure about capacities but you could just buy some cheap oil and run it for a week to flush through and then put new good oil in? It's what I'm doing at the moment as my oil was contaminated with water

You'll never get all the old oil out of the engine unless you strip it...

If you really wanted to you could take the oil cooler off and drain it....

On a brand new engine build I will use a 5 litre tub, and a bit more, the published capacity of the mini engine with oil filter change is 4.8 litres which suggests there's approx 0.2+ litres of oil which will remain in the engine, one with an oil cooler a little more...

The key is to change the oil before it "needs" changing.

Or by a cheap oil to use as a flush.

I don't think the current oil is too bad, I was just hoping to get as much out as I can. Old rubbish may be a tad harsh...

The engine is coming out in a  few months for some gearbox work so, this will only be a 1000-1500 mile use before much better stuff goes in. I have just under 5 litres in my current can, so I will pick up another can of it tomorrow before doing this tomorrow night I think.
