All I can see it doing to an almost standard engine is use more fuel with very little increase in performance, it certainly wont be noticeble in the lower revs.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but stick with the SU until you have modded the engine to the point that it would benefit from the Webber. It still will use gallons more fuel though.

The stage one kit is a very good place to start.

Ignore that, there's no such thing as a stage 1 exhaust. Like Sprocket says, it's a stage 1 kit you need.

To get the best out of that carb you need to re-engineer your entire engine and do a lot of cutting and welding to the bodyshell, then find some kind of new dashboard that covers the mess you've made on the inside. A new carb is pretty much the last thing yo need to be thinking about when tuning a car, there's lots more useful things you can do to an engine first.

Carbs don't give an engine it's power. The state of the engine's overall tune is what determines how thermally efficient the engine is, the carb should then be chosen to make best use of what's available. An engine is just an air pump, when you have made it into a better pump it will be able to make more use of more fuel, at that point you can consider changing the carb.

But in any case, a single SU HIF 44 can flow very nearly as much air and fuel as a Weber in a Mini, and mix the fuel into the air more efficiently. The SU is a better designed instrument, you can get very nearly as much power out of it as out of a Weber but using a lot less fuel.
