998 Crank Pulley Nut Removal Without Flywheel

I know this question has been asked a million and one times before, but I appear to be in a slightly unique situation and I can't find an answer anywhere.

 

My partner and I are doing a complete strip and rebuild of a barn find Mini City 1000. It's an A+ 998 that's in amazing condition but unfortunately, some bugger took the manifolds off before stopping the project so the engine needs some attention before starting and besides, it's a great opportunity to put a couple of enhancements in.

 

 

So we have now gotten to this stage, where we have stripped everything off the engine Except (you guessed it) the crank pulley and timing case.

 

Does anyone have any ideas on how we can get the pulley nut off? I've seen one suggestion where we jam the crank using spanners/wood, but I don't want to damage it.

Air wrench ? even though its got nothing to work against my snap on one would wizz it off

Nice bit of 3x2 between number 1 or 2 big end and the inside of the block.
Won't do any damage.

GraemeC - Couldn't use something like a pair of thick spanners or a breaker bar could I? 

 

KernowCooper - Unfortunately my air compressor is dead, so I don't have access to any air tools. All happened at once this weekend XD

I wouldn't - wood won't slip and if it does it is soft enough to allow things to dig into it - much more forgiving.

Nothing wrong with that.

 

I did make a 'Crank Spanner' a while back, one of the handiest tools I have when stripping or building engines

I have a similar home made tool - great for when setting cam timing with DTIs

I like that crank spanner - I've never seen one before and may have to copy that myself. I always remember to leave the flywheel on as I made the tool that bolts into the starter motor bolt holes that locks against the starter ring teeth.

 

But for elusive elf, a block of wood to jam the crank should work perfectly.

I've successfully used a hammer handle jammed against the crank.

 I made the tool that bolts into the starter motor bolt holes that locks against the starter ring teeth.

 

Great stuff, yes, I made one of them too;-

One more vote for the piece of wood.  However, (and I don't make it a habit to say this to guys), Spider... nice tool.  I like the concept and will make one the next time I have an engine out for rebuild.
