Hi all,

quicky for you experts: want to get rid of the points & usually it's a case of adding the electronics to an existing dizzy.  cheap fix.

then there's an 'electronic dizzy' that's somewhat more expensive & probably for those with, or intend to heavily mod. their engines....

Then there's this:

http://www.minispare...|Back to search

that popped up as an advert, promoting their current 15% sale.

so is this middle ground.? I like the thought of adding a complete unit, as apposed to adding to. (probably makes absolutely no difference whatsoever, but hey, that's why I'm asking)

cheers as always from Belgium

Just be a little careful when considering buying one of those new Lucas (copy) dissys. I've tested around 30 of them now and no two remotely had the same curve, and they couldn't even say what the curve was to start with or what it should be!  These do seem to mostly be the ones from ebay, however even our local parts suppliers have them.

It is possible that those from Mini Spares and a few other parts suppliers could have those on offer correctly curved, I haven't had any here to test.

So for significantly less than £100, I can get this bundle from these guys:

http://www.simonbbc...._image&pID=1447

obviously coming from an established supplier, one would hope that everything is OK.?

IF I wanted to fit myself, would I need to buy a timing gun or the like.? or is it best to leave it to professionals.?

coming over to the UK, hopefully before Christmas to spend a day with Bill Richards in Ashford (Kent) - just a few miles from Eurotunnel! - want him to fully check my new baby out and start me on the road to ruin......

I have nothing but praise for the Simonbbc ignitions and coils, but have never bought a dizzy from them.

A timing light is a worthwhile investment.

So would you recommend sticking with just the ignition (points replacement) & a new coil (plus leads while I'm at it) - a complete 'electronic' dizzy is probably over kill for my std. 998.?!

No matter where you purchase from, it is worth checking against the timing light. I know of a couple of 'good brand' ones that were still advancing past 40. Quality control or shipping methods rather than poor build.... but not what was expected.

The build quality does vary a bit on the Far East Lucas ! if your current distributor is in good condition then a electronic ignition from Powersparks/Accusparks/Britpart (one and the same) and a engine tune with new plugs/leads/coil will transform it and make it more reliable.

Your 1978 car will be a 12v ignition coil so no issues with rewiring for you, just a direct replacement.
