MPi Cooper starts then stops

Has anyone experienced the same problem I am currently foxed with?

I have a 1999 Rover Cooper Sportpack and a couple of weeks ago I went to start it which it did and ran normal until I switched it off, upon trying to re-start it started and then cut off after approx 3 seconds.

I have checked all sensor connections with no luck, I called for an auto electrician who diagnosed the ECU to be at fault. I sent the ECU away to be re-furbed and it came back with no faults.

I have changed the Relay module and still no luck, it starts and runs from cold but when you switch it off it starts then cuts out after 3 seconds.

I am at my wits end and long for a simple solution to this problem, if any-one has had the same problem could you let me know th solution i would be very grateful. :dontgetit: :withstupid:

it needs to be pluged in and checked out, with someone who has a proper sensor/fault code sacnner like me but i am too far away proberly

it needs to be pluged in and checked out, with someone who has a proper sensor/fault code sacnner like me but i am too far away proberly

I am in surrey i am afraid but it seems good tenical fault finders are had to find just like the fault sometimes

check the relay module above the servo that can sometimes get melted and not work properly. spam had a problem with his like this and that was the fault.

I dunno, it sounds like it's got a problem switching between start and run mode or dropping back to idle and nothing in the relay pack is involved with that too much. I'd agree with Dave that the fault codes need reading. When the ECU was sent off, did it come back with a report on the fault codes or just saying the unit itself was OK?

it needs to be pluged in and ruunning yo get the full responses yes fault codes can be picked off an ecu, but better to be able to check the sensors etc at same time

Thank you for all your replies to my problem, I changed the relay module the other day and the fault is still there.

I have just changed fuel filter and the fault is still there but if I press the inertia switch it will start and run.

I have a a mechanic with his diagnostic software coming out this week thanks to your advise.

I will let you know the outcome. :proud:

I recon the inertia switch is goosed

If you have to press it for it to start, this is wrong. Take it off, shake it, it should rattle, press the top to reset it, it should noticebly 'click'. Try pressing it again, there should be no movement or click heard from it, if there is, its deffo goosed.

These swirches have a ball bearing in side, and if you drive over a sharp bump it can cause the ball to jump and trip the switch. I have heard that they are a common problem on the injection Minis due to the harsh driving characteristic they have. They also suffer corossion internaly on the contacts of the ball

Does it bypass the innertia switch as part of the startup then Sprocket?

No, but intermitant faults like this I have found to be the inertia switch.

Just seems odd that when you push the top it starts and runs, that to me is the fault. the inertia switch carries the current for the fuel pump directly so the contacts can become dirty espetialy if the ball inside is jumping a little bit everytime you hit a pot hole causing arking but not enough to trip the switch. Might also be that the latching mechanism of the switch is worn out and tripping with the slightest of vibration.

Like i say, inertia switch problems are normaly intermitant
