I'm in the process of piecing together my 1098 engine, I'm have an issue with one of the cam followers. It won't go in. The other 7 have all gone in fine, apart from the one nearest the rad end of the engine. The whole just seems too tight! The others can move freely up and down just by pinching it with my finger and lifting it up and down. This last one won't drop into the whole, I don't want to force it for fear of causing damage. Have you any ideas on what the best course of action is?

Harry

Have you tried another follower in the same hole?

OK... so you have tried different followers in that hole and you have tried sandpaper on the entrance of the hole and there is no fit?

I assume these are new cam followers and a new cam.  You are not supposed to mix new and old parts and you are not supposed to change the location of a cam follower (if you are using old parts, the cam follower for intake 3 needs to be put back in the same lifter hole to ride on the same cam lobe and so on).

Hopefully you have not installed the cam yet as any sanding debris is going to need to be carefully cleaned away.

Look carefully for damage to the entrance of the lifter hole.  New lifters sometimes have an etched, slightly rough surface.  You may find that chucking the new lifter in a lathe and polishing its outside diameter with a bit of ScotchBrite will remove enough of the rough outside diameter that it will fit the hole in the block.  Avoid any heavy sanding that will significantly change the lifter diameter.  Also make sure that there are no burrs on the front of the new cam follower that are catching on the hole entrance.

It's a built up engine and gearbox I'm afraid. It's got brand new followers. And the cam is a NA MG metro. I haven't tried to remove too much material from the follower entrance either

Sandpaper won't work ... that's for wood! Any sand left over will however make a mess of bearings, etc.

Feel the follower hole with you finger for any edges or bumps.

Strip the engine down again, or atleast flush it with LOTS of oil before filling it up and starting it. Unless you want your new built engine to be FUBAR within 10 seconds.

I'd take it to a pro engine builder and see if they can do it.
