At some point I will be getting my hands dirty with my troublesome auto gearbox & was wondering if this was worth buying.

Foulis' Overhaul Manual: A.P. Automatic Transmission for BLMC Mini, Austin
Morris 1100/1300 and Austin America by John Organ, published in 1972. In
good used condition with some marking and a tear to the dust wrapper @
£60.00

It's not cheap.

I'm sure I've seen a PDF version somewhere on the internet for £26 but can't seem to find it again.

I could try my local library & see if they can get it in to look at.

How comprehensive is it ?

I've seen the Austin america site that explains forward clutch removal & upgrade/repair but is that over simplified ?

Do I buy at £60 or not ?

I've not seen that one, though I do have an original copy of the BMC Manual that they published for the Auto's. I'll also add that any factory manual is always written for the Professional Mechanic who often has every tool known to man at their disposal, so not always helpful to the guy at home.  The after-market Manuals usually are better at this, but don't always have all the info in them either.

Not sure if it's the same bloke, however there was a John Organ who did work for BMC (Longbridge and Abingdon), he did a stint in the Works workshop at Abingdon for a few years and aparently he did go on to author a few books.

I've got various manuals for auto mini,s and auto metro workshop manuals.plus a couple of ap manuals.if you go on the automatic mini register, there a guy on there who has uploaded quite a few with the links. Imo the one you want is AKM4694 and AKD4886. Hope this helps.

The Austin America info makes the forward clutch repair sound relatively easy ?

Everything sounds fairly easy when you start, but most issues with an auto box will not be the result of one failure... Changing the forward clutch may mean that is now working, but if the brake bands are worn, no matter what you change the unit will still not function...

IMO, if there's anything more than changing the oil and possibly adjusting the brake band operation clearances, then the whole unit needs to be dissasembled and rebuilt. Don't try and do half a job as you'll probably just waste time and money.

Ive got my whole auto gearbox disassembled now. I was very worried I'd screw something up, but I'm quite pleased that it all went ok. For me its more that I want to learn how it all works, which I'm doing and its very interesting. Next up is to overhaul all the units and replace whats needed. I contacted JPat who were extreemly patient and helpful, and explained that they can provide a basic overhaul kit or a master kit, which contains most of the plates and seals needed. Itll be a long job for me as Im also doing Felix's bodywork resto, but it really is enjoyable.

I would agree with Guessworks too. I need to take LOTS of photos and I dont move on with it until I understand exactly what 'that bit does' and how it affects the other componenents.

Need quite a few boxes for all the bits too !

like you I've been concentrating on welding/bodywork and am yet to start on the box, I've got 3 to play around with and have amassed various new consummable parts from the fleabay over the last couple of years. Did you need any special tools or have you been improvising? Also what did jpats quote you for the rebuild kits?. Terry.

I've had to improvise Terry as the service tools are like hens teeth as you probarbly know. I've managed so far but I'm not sure if I need anything special for overhauling the components, or any special re-alignment tools for the re-build. I guess I'll find out soon  .

After a bit of head scratching I made this for holding the output gear while I removed the input gear nut which worked really well .......

For the APII (1981 on) box, the Basic overaul kit is currently £129 + VAT, and the Master kit is £200 + VAT.

Brake bands are £50 each + VAT (on exchange).

I have a Project page for my Auto engine over on the Automatic Mini Register web site if you want to take a look. http://autominiregis...ads/recent/1391

I'm certainly not a competent transmission mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but I found photo content on the web for them a little sparse when I was gathering info, and thought it might halp anyone else doing one if they are not sure how to go about it. I need to update it as it's all stripped now, and I'll continue to post up the overhauling of the seperate components and finally the re-build, but it'll be a bit stop start depending on when I do work on it.

Good to see someone else saving the Auto

Know it was some time ago, but did you succeed in getting a technical manual for the AP gearbox. Am rebuilding mine in a 1996 Mini and need one. Any help appreciated
