Hi all,

Have reccently noticed that if you pull at the steering wheel it moves along with the column about a quater to half an inch, it can then be pushed back. This was only noticed as when accelerating the steering wheel moves towards you and then braking it falls back.

Not currently driving because of this, but woukd like to be back on the road soon. Therefore does anyone have any advice on the issue and what may be causing it? There's no issue of pulling to one side.

Thanks in advance!
Ste3po.

Sounds like the pinch bolt at the bottom of the column could be loose, check that first, either that or the steering wheel nut is loose.

+1 pinch bolt. Check it is the right one... I have now had 2 cars on which they were replaced with a set screw metric sized.

As the other guys have said and I'd strongly suggest removing the column and checking the splines before tightening or replacing the bolt. If it's been doing it for a while, then the splines maybe worn and unless you have a look, you'll have no way of knowing - except by accident!

I'd also suggest when replacing the column to re-align the rack to to, just to be sure to be sure.......

<edit: These days I fit a Grade 12 In-Hex Nut and Bolt so you can get them just little bit tighter to stop them working loose. IMO, they should have fitted a 5/16" bolt in there, the 1/4" one is just a wee bit undersized.>
