So Arthur, 1988 mini city, has just returned from having some work at Somerford. His battery does not sound like it's very happy so I'm off to Moss in Bristol to get a new one asap.

They list two options on the website under the heading of classic mini:

GBY5601W Battery, 12 Volt, White Plastic Case, WET 32 amp/hr

GBY015 Battery, 12 Volt, White Plastic Case, Heavy Duty, WET, 36 amp/hr

When I phoned up to see if they had them in stock the guy sounded really uncertain about whether the second one would be suitable for a mini (but I guess as it is listed on the company website under minis it must be!)

A few questions:

Anyone tried either / both of these? Can they confirm they are a solid battery for a standard 998 mini?

They are the same price, any benefit in getting the 'heavy duty' 36 amp/hr battery?

Will they both be the same size or can I expect the 'heavy duty' one to be larger?

Cheers :)

They are both the same size. 238 x 135 x 181mm.
I would go for the heavy duty one if it was me as they're the same price.

Why go to moss for a battery? Why not go to a reputable motor factor or halfords? Better batteries and much cheaper.

Hm. Interesting point. I just figured that Moss, as a classic car specialist, would be a better place to go. I might pop over to Halfords or a local motor factor and see what they've got.

Take a tape to halfords and double-check .. they do have a habit of selling the wrong sized batteries for some cars ... :-(
