Hello everyone, may I can quiz you good people about my distributor. The one in question is off my 1275GT engine. Not sure what age the engine is as I bought it for a transplant. It is a Lucas 45DM4 the other numbers are 42653A and 3087. It is a non-vacuum type, whether it started life without a vacuum I do not know. The whole thing is fairly 'dog-eared' so I plan to renew the whole thing. I assume I replace with the same again, is the 45Dm4 available as a non-vacuum type,I say this as it looks like the old one has been 'altered' . The engine has a piper fast road cam in I believe this is relevant in choosing a distributor ?Also would electronic ignition be worthwhile? Thanks in advance. Ferg.

I have a list of around 3000 Lucas UL Dissys and while that one's on the list, there's next to no useful data there, however it does say that it's a 65DM4.

By the sounds of it, the dissy may have been modded to suit the engine spec, but that's only a guess.  Yes, you are correct with your question that since the engine has been modified, the distributor does now need to be changed from a stock on to suit the new engine spec.

The electronic ones are many and varied, I think it fair to say that they are all pretty good.

You could also consider something like a CSI Distributor if you're thinking of a replacement, as these have 16 selectable curves and I believe there are other models which are fully programable (from a laptop), so you (or your Dyno man) can easily and quickly tailor the curve to best suit your engine spec.

As you have a cam change I assume someone would have done the cylinder head (port/flowed) and C.Ratio, in which case I would use a Aldon yellow with vacuum advance for road use.

Todays points and condensers vary in quality and a upgrade to electronic would be more reliable and give more accurate timing and with a coil upgrade to a Gold Sports Type (MSC 105 Minispares) you can open up the plug gaps to 30thou
