My rear view mirror is quite difficult to see with as it vibrates too much. It's the sort that attaches to a roof bracket and then has a sucker on the windscreen.

Would swapping to a more modern (probably slightly larger) stick-on mirror be any improvement, or is it just down to the buzzy little A-series?

Mine used to detach from the widscreen all the time until I found a larger sucker-thingy in B&Q that I bodged to fit my mirror and now its great, very little vibration and it hasnt come unsuckered yet!  Just minimise the movement on the rear of the mirror to suction cup and it will improve.

I had one of those SS mirrors when I originally got my car but it was bleddy useless with so much vibration.  I have a (very randomly) Maestro van mirror in mine now, much wider and way less buzzy.

I bought a new sucker from Minispares which has improved matters massively. That and making sure the screen was very clean inside so that the sucker can stick well.

I did the same and my mirror works perfectly with no vibration.
