I have a number of running faults on my 72" Clubman which I'm slowly trying to sort out individualy.

The main fault is poor running at low revs and an intermittent overheating problem.

So today I've cleaned the carb and changed the spark plugs and it runs far better but still not perfect.

On taking the old plugs I thought I would take pics to see what people think? Is my leaded head giving up the ghost?

I have just checked the distributor cap and the contact are pretty burnt so I'm.Going to order a cap, rotor arm and new points.

If the two black plugs came from adjacent bores I'd be suspecting a head gasket failure between the two. A compression test would tell you if that is the case.

The spark plugs came off in order from left to right.

Two middle bores are always rich on these engines, to be honest id leave the fuelling as it is.

Do you have oil in the dashpot(on carb)??
What is the timing set at? Note this and report back...

Now to the overheating, give the radiator and heater matrix a good flush, i disconnect the bottom hose at the engine end, and split the heater pipes (use a drain pan to catch old coolant)

Flush until the water runs clear.

Remove thermostat and test this, does it open?

Now reattach pipes and fill with fresh antifreeze to 50/50 mix with water,

Fill a container with 5litres of water, then take the car a drive, just long enough so the temperature needle starts to move on the guage(3 miles will be long enough) let the car cool then check the Antifreeze level

Dump the points and get the britpart elec ignition kit only £25 quid. Doddle to change over just a 5 min job. A new set of plugs might be a good idea also.

I honestly don't know what the timing is and wouldn't know how to yet.

But I can certainly flush the rad and heater system out and do that.
