ALright, i think i know what it is. I just dont want to admit it to myself.

Today i took a trip into town, only five miles away. Everything was fine and dandy. I finnished what ever i was doing and came back to my car. I turned the key and she started as normal, but only ran for about half a second and stalled.

Opening the bonnet I found that the relay modual had broken free of its mount and decided to throw itself onto the exahust manifold. Thus melting the case and scorching a relay coil.

Rang the AA man and he found the nearest rover parts dealer for a new relay modual. £33.15 later and we were back at my car. Plugged in the new realy modual, turned the key to II and a relay inside the modual started clicking, like it wasnt latching on. Decided to try and start it anyway, but no joy.

Then the AA man did his standard ignition invest and found out that there was no switch to the coil. We also found out that removing the smaller connector stop the clicking relay. And if we disconnected the fuel cut-off switch the relay stopped clicking, at the same time the stepper motor was doing its thing.

We did a couple of voltage check and found that the white/pink wire in the smaller connector while cranking, which was fine, and the black/pink wire was live with the key at II. We couldnt check anything at the ECU because we didnt know which pin was which.

A couple of more things. I have the standard alarm/immobiliser and an after market TC1 fitted, and yes they were off the whole time. I do know the after market one cuts off the supply to the fuel pump. I also tried re-seting the ECU but it didnt work.

Like i said i have an idea what it is, but id like your comments first.

Cheers

Only thing i could suggest at this point is to check for wires that may have got melted at the same time and also check to make sure the connectors are good (and firmly in place).
Oh and maybe press the fuel cutoff switch just to make sure, and check your fuses.
Although im sure the AA man has done that already :proud:

All fuzes are good, cutoff switch is ok. Gonna strip back the loom tomorrow to see what i can find.

If its not wiring then my money is on a new ECU :'(

Unfortunatly the lable on the original is faded, and this rover dealer only had one on the shelf. all the keyways on the connectors match up.

Sadly the relay packs for several different Rover MEMS cars/engines look the same and have the same connectors on but are markedly different internally and can't be substituted for each other. The correct one is YWB10022. It is very common for people (particularly Rover dealers incidentally) to confuse the pack with the Metro one which is different.

Hey thank Sprocket, it was his suggestion first.

It might not be the salvation you're looking for but it's a good start.

Yes you can exchange it since they gave you the wrong one.

Okie dokie, cheers Sporcket.

Guess theres still a chance of my ECU being FUBAR due to the fact the wrong relay pack was fitted. I just hope im wrong!

Hopefully she'll be fixed for Dragwars
