I went to my local paint suppliers yesterday asking a few questions .
I want to spray my engine block a certain colour .
The guy is going to mix it for me but advised me to etch primer it first .
Is this correct as I thought it was for aluminium.
Thanks

No, etch primer can be used on both Aluminium and ferrous metal. There are different types so make sure you get the correct one. For cars i have been using Upol Etch Primer. You can get this from Halfords in spray tin form.

Will you need a certain type of etch primer for a engine due to heat?

You should be ok with a standard etch. It doesnt need to be thick just a light coat for adhesion. Ive never had issues.
