Give simonbbc a call and get a coil and elec ign. I can think of at least 11 cars we have fitted them too, the oldest about 4 years ago on my mates daughters daily driver, and never had any issues.

Can't help with alternators.

Mike

Note: I have no connection with simonbbc other than being a satisfied customer.

Powerlite do good alternators for sensible money. The guy to talk to is George Shackleton (relative of Ernest Shackleton before anyone asks).

The only thing I am having issues with is headlight switches.

Bought 2 from a well known supplier and both are playing up within a few months on my van and lads car.

Frustrating.

This would indicate a problem else were. Running to rich or a poor spark????

I use ngk s and seem to be the best around.

I've not had many problems with new parts, the main one being the heater taps.

going to check it tomorrow as we need to use it for the day. I have an electronic ignition there is allways spark there and plug color are all the same color black with brown tips. Not sure if it's head gasket or just running rich. If it's running rich what do I do to stop it? Cheers Tom

There is a problem with bad alternators out there. Minispares sent a free replacement though.

That's partly why I mentioned it, he knows a lot about him as you would expect and the family still has a lot of his records and documents. I found out by jokingly asking if he was a relative, I never expected him to say yes!

Hmmmm,,,,,,  Spare these days,,,,,,,  you had to bring this up,,,,,,,,

I find it VERY frustrating, the genuine (as in same as what was fitted on the production line) has just about dried up, and what's now on offer ranges from better than OEM (though not much), to something you wouldn't even give to your Mother-in-law for her birthday.

Sadly, even many of the quality aftermaket manufacturers have gone to the wall or shut up shop, some of those names & rights have been bought, but what appears on the shelves these days bearing the names of old are not in the same league.

Rubbers are a real issue. I've had many sets (mostly suspension) perish before I've finished doing builds! (and no, I usually knock them over in a few months, not years!)

Electrical parts, well, right from when you open the box, you know that you'll be replacing them again in about a year. I had a coil last me a whole 4 days, I replaced that with one the same, and I think I got 9,,,,no,,, maybe 10 minutes from it.

Every time I go on a buy up for parts, it takes forever, reseaching and checking, even what we got last time compared to the next is often different, but not always adversly so.

I was working with a good friend for a while (on the design side) as he was designing and having quality parts made, however due to some unwarrented criticism (by a couple of jealous smarty pants) on a local forum, he's pulled the pin on it all. He was doing it mostly to support that group (many were greatful and morn this loss).

There are some bits that I just don't seem to be able to source (the right quality), so I make them.

If any of the suppliers / manufacturers read this, I'd just like to say thanks, but also, please supply us OEM (or better) bits please. Speaking for myself, I am prepared to pay more for that, as it's so much cheaper to pay what ever and do the job once.

<Edit: Also, myself and a few of my friends go away on big trips in to some extremely remote areas, we depend on our vehicles being reliable to get us in and out of these places safely, so for us, it's not just a case of pulling over to the side of the road and making a phone call - often there's no phone service in these areas and even if there was, there's no one that will come to the rescue!>

Points and Condersors are poor quality and the latest one to be identified are the Gold Lucas Coil DLB 105, Minispares have stopped selling these due to the high failure rate and obviously made in the far east and sold under the Lucas name,

I recommend that is anyone is looking for a Ignition coil to speak to Minispares they have replaced the dropped Lucas DLB 105 with a MSC 105 which is made by Intermator in their factory in Europe, they also have a standard 12v Intermotor Coil if you don't require the sports type..

Fit a Hall Effect Electronic Ignition like Britpart/Powersparks/Accusparks and one of the new quality Red Rotors from the Distributor Doctor (Watch Red Ones On Ebay--- Copies) and you'll have a far more reliable electrics on your car.
