Quality of rubber parts was recently discussed at length here:-

http://www.theminifo...s-rubber-parts/

Reasons?

I don't think the vast majority of UK Mini enthusiasts who run 'regular' Mini's on a shoestring will yet pay the higher prices required for quality parts with the very low volumes now required since the Mini went out of mass production.......watch the crowds at any Mini show in the UK buying parts from 'here today gone tomorrow' traders selling cheap unbranded Chinese imports, rather than ordering something that will fit and last longer from a supplier like Minispares. I suppose that may change over the next 10 years or so as the remaining 'daily driver' Mini's disappear and most that are left become cherished classics where only the best will do?

Regarding KC's post above, from the Minispares website on the  MSC 105 coil page: "CAN ONLY BE USED ON 998cc MINIS UP TO 82 or NON BALLAST TYPE MINIS."  I find that a bit misleading, I assume it means any non-ballast mini or am I just having a case of brain fart?

Highest failure rate:

Anything Rubber /Poly

Anything with a lucas brand on it from points to coils to switches

Then so many rad caps that dont hold pressure, too many faulty spark plugs around, lets not open the worm can about bearings and counterfeit parts..

Plus

I hate bosh parts, simply not like what they were used to be 10 years ago

I will never buy anything with a beru sign on it

Chrome wipers are death traps

Some timing chains around are simply ridicolous

That said there is still some good parts on the market, and usually at minispares they try help when you have issues with quality parts

Lots of repro c12ap about without any quality control or PPAP certification.

Generally you get what you pay for but anything not made for or by the OEM is at risk of premature failiure.

My rule of thumb is "if it aint broke don't change it" for new shiney parts

quick question; would that apply to say an oil pump or water pump?

Just curious, as I know someone who swears by keeping the working parts.

cheers

I would measure the float and visually check the oil pump and if within tolerance I would reuse it.

Same with the waterpump if it was not leaking and the bearings were good.

Just bought a new rad from mini spares as the one I bought from another supplier has blown on the top seal. 13 months old...(and no hg or other engine issues to blame)

Bought one for the Cooper about 4/5 years ago. Not had an issue since and again it was a standard one from Minispares.

Generally, parts aren't what they used to be that's for sure... last time I looked at genuine Mercedes stuff they had made in China on it.

Everything is made cheap and crappy now it seems...

They list it that way because the standard loom wiring provides 9v ballasted setup for cars after that age and before they were all standard 12v, obviously if later cars have been modified to a standard 12v system then you can use the MSC 105 or the standard 12v coil, both made by intermotor

I purchased and fitted new hilo's and knuckle joints from minispares at the IMM 2014, I've already had to replace them as they failed the last MOT in November, so a full 4 months before the rubber perished!  I can't remember if they where genuine or not, but I remember using cheap ones on a previous project which deteriorated before it was on the road so I think they where genuine.

Also approx 3-4 weeks ago I bought a lock set, again from minispares, and fitted them with grease, but the old original locks had a smoother mechanism, i have to jiggle the keys to get them in, and the boots dust cap has already dislodged.

Might as well just buy second hand parts, even 40 year old locks and knuckle joints work
