Hi all,

Just about to lower a new lump in the car, will I be able to get the pot joints/driveshafts into the gearbox/diff without undoing the hub nuts/ball joints/discs etc?

Thanks in advance.

Jay.

no, you need to undo the top ball joint and split it, then pull the hub outwards so that the new engine can be put in, then push them back in when its in:)

Yes you will, it's easy. I never split the suspension to lift or fit an engine any more. Have the pot joints on the shafts ready to go with the boots all greased and tied up and the car on it's wheels. Lower the engine and as you get it nearly in position slot the joint on the long shaft into place, it doesn't have to click in just be on the spline. You will have to swing the engine a little but it's easy. Keep lowering and the joint will slide further into the box as you go, then fit the short one when the engine is a bit lower but still hanging and hasn't touched down. The first time you do it you have to work out what height it needs to be to slot each shaft in and out but it's not hard. Once it has touched down make sure both joints are clicked into the box.

As Dan says, this is the method. No need to split BJ's or pot joints.

Just takes a fair bit of pulling and shoving but they will go in, if the engine is still on the crane its easier as you can move the engine about.

So for the reverse of this. I should be able to remove my engine by cutting the clips on the pot joint boots and just jiggle the engine a little as I lift?

No, just pop the joints out of the gearbox or the shaft out of the joint, but taking the whole thing out of the box is easier. You should never split pot joints, there is no need to unless changing a gaiter and they rarely fail.

As Dan says, never cut the clips on the pot joints and risk loosing the relationship of the balks a and the tracks and introducing dirt.
