Having removed the front subframe from my project car I've found that there are plates welded over the two holes to the rear, here's a picture to show what I mean...

And a close up of one side....

Should I be concerned about this?

Patching a subframe is fine so long as it is seam welded properly and it should pass an MoT. This looks like plates have been put over existing metal which may mean there is a nasty surprise hiding underneath.

was the car rallied?

could just be to keep the crud out. Or..... what is the other side like?

Thanks, that was one of my initial concerns about this, there are a few such "repairs" that I'll be having to re-do around the shell! I'll have to give some thought to whether I want to re-do these or simply replace the subframe, not a cheap item to replace though!

It's not been rallied, only ever used on the road I believe, both sides are the same, looking forward (not) to getting the rear subframe off!!

Think I'd be grinding them off or looking for a new subbie.

What do they look like from the top? can you see the original frame from there or has a plate been welded on there as well.

In the second pic it also looks like there's a hole below the bottom arm - unless it's white stuff on the frame just making it look like you can see through it.

From the top you can see that the holes that were supposed to be there have been welded to the plate so it has been seal up, could be just for crud protection so I think I'll grind them off and see how it looks underneath before making any decision.

That white spot is just dust of the garage floor rather than a hole, it seems solid, just some surface rust here and there so if there's no horrors under the plates it could be salvageable.

Thanks for the responses!

I would be tempted to whip them off to see what's going on.

I'll post a pic on Thursday, will definitely be whipping them off before I take any decisions about ditching it, when I do I'll post an update too....

If you can see the original metal from the other side and there's no rust there I'd tend to just clean it and paint it rather than trying to grind them off. The welds don't look the best but I bet it'll still be a royal pain of a job to remove them without damaging the subframe. From the sound of it they are someone's idea of strengthening the frame rather than repairing rust.

Gonna leave it for the time being, don't need to do anything with it for the time being so will decide another day whether to grind em off or leave em alone, just slightly worried about what may be lurking underneath!

Mm not liking the look of that.

You need to clean up around the bolts as I can't see what is going on there with all the crud that is there.

Does it look like the mounting holes have rusted out and these plates are added to be the new mounting holes for the subframe?

Or is it double thickness where the bolts are?
